Les Articles Définis: Definite Articles
The French definite article corresponds to "the" in English. There are four forms of the French definite articles. They are:

The | le | la | l' | les |
Note:
"le" - before the words which are masculine
"la" - before the words which are feminine
"l'" - irrespective of the gender, if the singular word starts with a vowel "a, e, i, o, u, h" then " l' "to be used.
"les" - before all plural words
le cahier - the notebook
la gomme - the eraser
l'ami - the friend
les garçons - the boys
Uses:
- A thing that is unique:
la lune, les étoiles, le président italien, le soleil - A thing that is determined in the sentence (unique in the context)
Il aime beacoup le stylo que tu l'as prêté.
Elle a la voiture de Robert. - A thing that has been mentioned before (a thing that is determined in the context as unique)
Il a une fille et un fils. La fille a 8 ans et le garçon a 6 ans.
