Quel (the French equivalent is 'which' or 'what') is used in questions in which you are trying to find the answer to the questions 'which one?' or Exactly what?' and is always based on a noun or noun phrase.
Quel, beacause it is an adjective, has to agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies, Look at the different forms of quel:
Quel est votre nom? (masculine)
Quelle est votre musique préférée? (feminine)
Quels sports pratiquez-vous? (masculine, plural)
Quelles sont vos matières préférées? (feminine, plural)
Basically, quel is used whenever you want specific information about a noun.
Exemple:
Sophie m'a prêté un CD Quel CD? (Sophie lent me a CD, Which CD?)
Like most questions words, quel can be used with all types of questions, but it is mainly used with Est-ce que or inversion.
Exemple:
Quel livre est-ce que tu veux?
Quel livre veux-tu?
Tu veux quel livre? (spoken French)
Quel can be used after a prepositions.
Exemple:
A quelle heure veux tu partir?
De quele professeurs est-ce qu'il parle?
Quel can stand alone, followed by être.
Exemple:
Quel est le problème?
Quelle est la différence?
Quel can also be used as an exclamatory adjective.
Exemple:
Quel dommage! (what a pity)
Quelle surprise! (what a sruprise!)
