Typing French Accents & Characters

1. Windows (PC):

Using the US-International Keyboard:

1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Select Region and Language.
3. Click the Keyboards and Languages tab and then click Change keyboards.
4. Add the US-International option.
5. Use these key combinations:
   • ' (single quote) followed by a vowel = acute accent (e.g., é)
   • Shift + 6 followed by a vowel = circumflex (e.g., â)
   • ` (backtick) followed by a vowel = grave accent (e.g., à, è, ù)
   • Shift + ' followed by a vowel = dieresis/umlaut (e.g., ï)
   • Shift + / = ç

Alt Key Codes:

Hold the Alt key and type these codes on the numeric keypad:

• é = Alt + 0233
• è = Alt + 0232
• ê = Alt + 0234
• ë = Alt + 0235
• ç = Alt + 0231
• â = Alt + 0226
• à = Alt + 0224
• î = Alt + 0238
• ï = Alt + 0239
• ô = Alt + 0244
• ù = Alt + 0249
• û = Alt + 0251
• ü = Alt + 0252

2. macOS (Apple Computers):

• é = Option + e, then e
• è = Option + `, then e
• ê = Option + i, then e
• ë = Option + u, then e
• ç = Option + c
• â, ê, î, ô, û = Option + i, then the vowel
• à, è, ù = Option + `, then the vowel
• ë, ï, ü = Option + u, then the vowel

3. Android:

Hold down the letter key that you want to accent or modify. A set of options will appear. Slide your finger to the desired character.

4. iOS (Apple Mobile Devices):

Similar to Android, hold down the letter or character you wish to accent or modify. A set of options will pop up. Slide your finger to the desired character.

5. BlackBerry:

Hold the letter key and roll the trackball or trackpad left or right to view the accent options. Click the trackball or trackpad to insert the selected character.

6. Tablets:

For most tablets, it's similar to the mobile phone instructions. Hold down on the letter or character to get the modified options.
